Lois Griffel

Lois Griffel, Director of the Cape Cod School of Art, began her training studying traditional painting with master teachers Ray Kinstler and Harvey Dinnerstein at the Art Students League in New York. She later studied with Henry Hensche, the protégé of Charles Hawthorn, founder of the 100-year-old Cape Cod School of Art.

A classical impressionist, Ms. Griffel uses color to express light and form. She works en plein-air to capture the subtleties and luminous light effects of nature. She has incorporated earlier influences of tradiontal painting with that of the Impressionists.

Lois has had many one-person exhibitions throughout New England and she has been invited to exhibit in New York, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and California. Two of her paintings were selected for the Art in Embassy program by the United States Department of State for Ambassador Robert W. Kimmett, Germany. One of her paintings was featured on a cover of American Artist Magazine, and another was the cover for MacMillan Publication’s Fiction 50, American Short Stories. Featured frequently in publications, Ms. Griffel has received years of positive reviews.

Whatever her subjects, Ms. Griffel’s pieces seem to glow with optimism. There is something irrefutable in them, something which claims the worthiness of being in our world.” Lois Griffel's Painting the Impressionist Landscape
Adam Gamble, Provincetown Magazine
“Her dazzling colorization combined with a rapid, open form brings a sense of immediacy to the canvases. The canvas glows in areas of light. The many parts unify on the retina and the painting suddenly vibrates with life. They are a visual pleasure.”
Marc Mellett, Provincetown Paper
